This weekend at the WD-40 Phillip Island Supersprint is an important one for the team. The 120 kilometre race on Saturday will mark Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport’s 200th V8 Supercar race start – a pretty big achievement for this small team!
I’m really proud to be involved in the team’s milestone and of course I’m hoping that both Andre and I have a good day on Saturday to reward Lucas for the work he’s put in.
I have mostly good racing memories of Phillip Island and it’s always a track I enjoy going back to. In fact I had one of my first proper car races there back in 2005 in a Formula Ford. Four years later I sealed the 2009 Formula Ford championship there with Sonic.
Another memorable moment was starting my very first main series V8 Supercar race there, alongside Andrew Thompson in the Bundaberg Racing Commodore in 2010.
My preparation leading into this weekend has been fairly standard. I travelled to Winton Raceway earlier this week and helped LDM’s Dunlop Series driver Alex Rullo through a day of testing. It was really rewarding and I think he’ll be a lot stronger in the Dunlop Series competition this weekend also.
It’s only been six months since the V8 Supercars last raced at the Island, but for me personally it been much longer than that. At the Phillip Island event last November I completed the first practice session but was then rushed back to hospital with an ongoing blood infection issue. Paul Dumbrell had to step in as an emergency replacement for the remainder of the weekend.
This time around I’m hoping to make it through the entire event! I’m also hoping we can get some more speed out of the car and use the longer races and strategy to get some solid finishes.
