Hey everyone,
This week we finally get back to racing at Surfers paradise, one of the most exciting tracks we visit. It has been 3 years since we have tackled the intense street circuit and its an event that never fails to deliver on and off the circuit.
The circuit itself would be the most brutal street circuit in the world. There is absolutely no run off or places to escape if you make a mistake, it is literally a concrete jungle! Adding to the toughness of the event is the beautiful Queensland weather.
This weekend the temperatures look to be between 27c and 30c across the 3 days, which means inside the supercar we will see cockpit temperatures around the 60c. The teams and drivers all do there best to be as prepared as possible. From myside the hydration leading into the event is key, I started upping my hydration about 1.5 weeks ago to make sure I enter the week ready.
My training went up a notch and I did longer and more explosive sessions in thermal clothing to try preparing for the heat. The teams add extra cooling to the pedals to try control the temps in the footwell, we often see people burning their feet in these races. Before and after each on track session I will be in the ice bath trying to keep my core temp down. It really is a tough event.
The Gold Coast layout is one I love, I have had great success here in Formula Ford, Porsche cup car and Supercars so I can not wait to try and get my hands on a unique trophy this weekend, the GC surfboard!
Since Bathurst the team has decided to change my engineer to Adam Austin, Adam has been at the WAU team for a long time and worked very closely with our engineers for a number of years. The last 2 years Adam has been the lead engineer on the WAU wildcard entries. I am looking forward to working with Adam and building our relationship for the remainder of 2022 before we have a full attack on the 2023 championship!
As usual you can tune into the coverage on Fox Sports 506 and catch up with how I am going across my social media pages
Cheers Nick
