Physical challenges are nothing new to MFL Sports Ambassador Katie Brennan and fellow women’s footballer Melissa Hickey. Representing Western Bulldogs and the Melbourne Demons respectively, they’re two of the biggest stars in the Women’s Australian Football League. They also happen to be awesome female role models and outspoken advocates for gender equality and women in sport. But this month, they’re taking on a different sort of challenge.
On the 9th October, in conjunction with Action Aid, Intrepid started the journey of leading over 30 African women farmers and a small group of travellers on a game changing trek up to Mt Kilimanjaro to raise awareness around land rights and gender inequality. And in a show of solidarity, Katie and Melissa are among them.
On October 15th, to coincide with the UN International Day of Rural Women, the climbers will join over 250 African women at a mass assembly, where those involved will produce a charter of demands for equal land rights to be presented to the United Nations and the African Union. The climb and assembly comes during the African Union’s year long focus on the “Rights of Women” in 2016.
Together, Intrepid Travel and the girls are helping lead the way for women’s land rights in Africa. Together, they will help women move mountains.
