Australia’s Economic Outlook

As the 2027 financial year progresses, Australia’s economy continues to navigate a period of adjustment, with inflation, interest rates and global conditions shaping the outlook for households and businesses.

The latest economic data points to a measured but resilient economy. GDP increased by 0.4 per cent in the June quarter, while business investment remains strong. Household spending has begun to moderate and labour market conditions have eased gradually, but overall economic activity continues to expand.

RBA Responds to Persistent Inflation

At its September meeting, the Reserve Bank of Australia increased the cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.60 per cent, reflecting the continued focus on bringing inflation sustainably back towards its 2–3 per cent target.

Inflation remains elevated, with ongoing domestic cost pressures contributing to higher prices. At the same time, the RBA has noted that tighter financial conditions are beginning to moderate demand, with consumer spending easing and housing market conditions softening.

For businesses and investors, the latest rate decision provides further clarity around the current economic environment. While borrowing costs remain an important consideration, businesses continue to invest where there is a clear commercial rationale.

Business Activity Remains Resilient

A constructive feature of the current environment is the continued level of business investment. Businesses are continuing to invest in equipment, vehicles, machinery and technology where these assets support productivity, efficiency and ongoing operations.

This measured approach is also evident across asset finance, with borrowers increasingly focused on the commercial value of their investments, while financiers remain focused on asset quality, cash flow and repayment capacity.

Looking Ahead

The months ahead are likely to remain characterised by a balance between resilience and adjustment. Inflation remains above target and interest rates are higher, but economic activity continues and businesses are adapting to the changing environment.

For investors, the current conditions reinforce the value of disciplined lending and exposure to productive assets supported by genuine commercial demand.

At Morris, our focus remains on these fundamentals, maintaining prudent credit standards while supporting businesses investing in the assets they need to operate and grow.

As conditions evolve, this disciplined approach provides a strong foundation for navigating the economic cycle and identifying opportunities within the asset finance sector.
