It was an incredible weekend of golf down at Barwon Heads’ 13th Beach Golf Links where the 2014 Oats Victorian Open was held. The event was a great success with crowds of over 20,000 attending to see the pros in action.
History was made at the 2014 Oates Victorian Open on Sunday when Matthew Griffin successfully endured a three-hole playoff to secure his first professional PGA Tour of Australasia title on home soil.
It was a long time coming for the 30-year-old Victorian who will join his idols when looking at his new addition to the trophy cabinet as well as enjoying the $150,000 in prize money. The 2013 women’s champion Stacey Keating described the victory as “incredible”. Griffin explained that “it’s just great to win at home and I’ve been close before and it’s nice to get over the line”.
The 2014 Oates Vic Open Women’s title was taken out by 17-year-old Minjee Lee over the weekend finishing with a score of -16 and -6 on the day. Having won at the amateur level, this is the first major win in a professional tournament for the Minjee Lee.
Minjee has been in contention in the past couple of weeks at the Ladies Masters and the Women’s Australian Open, but she hasn’t been able to seal the deal. This a big step forward in her young career as she follows up some brilliant performances this ALPG season with a massive win. She turned some heads and can now hold her head high with this win.
