MFL Sports Ambassador Nick Percat Perth Supersprint Preview
I’m pumped to head to the west this weekend for the Perth Supersprint, mainly because I’m hoping all our recent bad luck will stay on the eastern seaboard! Our Car 8 Brad Jones Racing crew really need to have a clean weekend after our shocking start to the year.
Sadly, since the opening race at the Clipsal 500 where we were in the hunt for a podium finish, it’s been a real struggle. We’ve had more than our fair share of mechanical dramas and race accidents this season, so a solid weekend is what’s needed to turn our momentum around.
The Phillip Island event was action packed, especially the Saturday race with all the tyre issues. Unfortunately, we were also a part of that so I feel an even greater need to get some championship points on the board.
Barbagallo Raceway is one of the shorter tracks that we go to, and one of the lowest grip circuits. Managing the tyres on the abrasive track surface will be one of the keys to getting a good result there. I personally wouldn’t be surprised if we see similar tyre issues as Phillip Island, but I’m really hoping we don’t!
The Perth track is like Symmons Plains in Tasmania. It’s a short sub 1-minute lap time so qualifying well is crucial. Our focus with Car 8 is to work on setting up a good qualifying car. This circuit has only six corners so it is much easier to hold track position than to try to make positions up.
There are three real passing opportunities from the six corners. There’s turn 1, the long right hander at the back of the circuit called ‘the basin’ and the final corner. That one features a big ripple strip on the exit and it makes great viewing for the fans there with cars flying over the curb and often four wheels in air.
In between events I travelled up to Newcastle to check out the new circuit for the Coates Hire Newcastle 500 in November. The facilities are top notch and it looks like we’ll have an amazing race there.
It’s very special for Supercars to have another street circuit on the calendar and for me it’s an important one as it’s backed by my personal sponsor Coates Hire.
