MFL Sports Ambassador Nick Percat Adelaide 500 Preview
We are just days away from the start of the 2018 Supercars season, and I can’t wait to get back in a race car! I’m looking forward to heading home and racing on the streets of Adelaide, it’s definitely a highlight of the year for me.
As a kid, I used to go to the parklands every year and watch the Adelaide 500. To now be racing in it is a very cool feeling, that doesn’t get old no matter how many times I line up on the grid.
The new ZB Commodore debuts in Adelaide for all the Holden teams and Brad Jones Racing has been very busy in the off season building three new cars. It’s been a huge effort from the team to get all our cars ready, particularly with the manufacturing of the new ZB panels and our new engine program with KRE.
I had my first hit out in the new ZB at the recent official test day at Sydney Motorsport Park. It was the first chance to test out our new chassis/ engine package on the new tyre. We showed good pace throughout the day and I was 5th quickest at the end of the day. My teammate Tim Slade was the fastest so I think the signs are good as we head to Adelaide.
Our spares inventory will be pretty tight in Adelaide though, so we can’t risk too much, especially during the Friday practice sessions. The priority is to make it through the two 250km races!
I’ve got Blackwoods on board Car 8 in Adelaide. It’s cool to bring a new brand into Supercars. They’re very excited to become involved and they’re a good fit at BJR because we use a lot of their tools and products in the fabrication shop.
I’m definitely ready to go after what feels like a lengthy off season. Training has been going well and I’ve been keeping things low key lately because race week in Adelaide is so demanding. There’s a lot of sponsor and media commitments and then throw in 500 kilometres of racing. You certainly feel it on the Monday after the event!
Adelaide holds some special memories for me. In 2016 I won the Clipsal 500 – my first individual Supercars race win. Last year I finished sixth, so if we can get the ZB in the window quickly then I think we’re in with a good shot of a podium finish. I’d love nothing more than to do the South Aussies proud!
